The neighborhood takes its name from Iroquois Park, a 725-acre park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted — the same landscape architect behind New York's Central Park — after he toured the site in 1891. The park opened in 1888 on land purchased by then-Mayor Charles Donald Jacob and was historically promoted as “Louisville's Yellowstone” for its dramatic hilltop setting just south of downtown.
The park remains the area's centerpiece today: a scenic overlook with panoramic views of Louisville, an 18-hole golf course, a disc golf course, an amphitheater that hosts concerts and theater productions all summer, a riding stable, and miles of old-growth-forest hiking trails.
