Jeffersontown was founded in 1797, when Abraham Bruner petitioned to incorporate 40 acres of his own land — the community was known as Bruner's Town, or Brunerstown, before the name Jeffersontown took hold. Today it's one of Jefferson County's most established suburbs, with its own historic downtown, Gaslight Square, celebrated each year at the Jeffersontown Gaslight Festival.

Jeffersontown is also home to the Bluegrass Commerce Park — Kentucky's largest industrial park, opened in 1966 as the first development of its kind in the country, now home to roughly 850 businesses and 38,000 jobs — plus the 600-acre Tyler Settlement Rural Historic District, with preserved pioneer-era log cabins, and the 170-acre Blackacre Nature Preserve, used for outdoor environmental education.
