Valley Station grew up as a mid-1800s settlement along what's now Dixie Highway, expanding into a full suburb during the 1950s and '60s — its name comes from its location between Muldraugh Hill and the Knobs. Like Fern Creek and other Jefferson County communities, it was an independent area until the 2003 city-county government merger folded it into Louisville Metro.
The area's signature landmark is Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing — a preserved 19th-century riverfront farm on the Ohio River, now a museum and event site — along with the Levee Trail for walking and biking. Valley High School serves the local community.
