Shively traces back to the early 1800s, when Christian Shively ran a mill and tavern on his 1,000-acre tract — the area drew a wave of German immigrant settlers before the Civil War. It incorporated as its own city on May 23, 1938, when local distillery owners pushed for independent incorporation specifically to avoid Louisville's annexation and taxation during the Depression. Shively remains an independent home-rule city today, surrounded by, but not part of, Louisville proper.
That distilling history is still visible: Shively is home to Brown-Forman's Early Times distillery, and the historic Stitzel-Weller distillery — added to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail in 2014 — along with Michter's, which opened a new distillery here in 2015.
