Why Do Two Homes on the Same E-town Street Go to Different Schools?
★ 5.0 on 144 Google reviews
Because Elizabethtown has two public school districts, and the line between them doesn't follow the ZIP code. Elizabethtown Independent Schools serves areas inside Elizabethtown, while Hardin County Schools serves the rest of the county, including plenty of homes with an Elizabethtown mailing address. The district boundary can split a single street, sometimes right down the middle by house number.

This one surprises buyers more than almost anything else I see in Elizabethtown. A family finds a house with an "Elizabethtown, KY 42701" address, assumes the kids will go to E-town schools, and then learns during the offer that the home is actually zoned to Hardin County Schools. Sometimes that's fine with them. Sometimes it changes everything. Either way, it's much better to know before you fall in love with the house.
Why does Elizabethtown have two school districts?
Kentucky still has dozens of "independent" school districts. These are city-based districts that operate separately from the county district around them. Elizabethtown Independent Schools is one of them. Hardin County Schools serves most of the county, including Radcliff, Vine Grove, Rineyville, Cecilia and the parts of the Elizabethtown area outside the independent district. Fort Knox is its own case: families who live on post are zoned to Department of Defense (DoDEA) schools.
So in the Elizabethtown area alone, a buyer can be looking at homes in three different school systems, depending on the exact address.
Does an Elizabethtown address mean Elizabethtown Independent Schools?
No. Your mailing address comes from the post office, and your school district comes from the district boundary. They aren't the same map. Many homes with an Elizabethtown address, especially in the newer subdivisions on the edges of town, are zoned to Hardin County Schools.
How can one street be split between two districts?
Boundaries were drawn and adjusted over many decades as the city grew and annexed land. The result is a line that zigzags through neighborhoods. Elizabethtown Independent's own street list shows stretches where only the odd-numbered houses on one side of a road are in the district, while the even-numbered houses across the street are not. On some streets, the district even assigns different elementary schools to different blocks of the same road.
That's why I never trust a guess, a ZIP code or even a listing's school field on its own.
How do I check which school district a house is in?
Here's the process I walk my buyers through before we write an offer:
- Start with Elizabethtown Independent's street list. The district publishes a list of streets in its boundary, including notes on split streets and house-number ranges.
- Call the district to confirm the exact address. Boundaries and school assignments can change, so a quick call to Elizabethtown Independent or Hardin County Schools is the final word.
- Treat the MLS school field as a starting point. Listing details are entered by people, and school fields can be wrong or out of date. Verify it yourself.
- Put it in writing before you're under contract. If schools matter to your decision, confirm the district before you sign, not after.
I'm happy to help you pull this together on any home we tour.
Which high schools serve the Elizabethtown area?
Elizabethtown Independent Schools has one high school, Elizabethtown High School. Hardin County Schools runs three traditional high schools: Central Hardin, John Hardin and North Hardin. Homes in the Elizabethtown area can feed into Elizabethtown High, Central Hardin or John Hardin depending on the address.
I don't rank schools for buyers. That's a personal decision, and every family weighs things differently. For test scores, programs and other official data, look up any school on the Kentucky School Report Card, then visit the schools you're considering.
Does being inside Elizabethtown city limits change anything else?
Yes, and it's worth checking at the same time. Whether a home is inside the city limits can affect your property tax bill and which local government handles services like trash pickup and police. City limits and the school district boundary aren't the same line either, so check both. The Hardin County PVA and the City of Elizabethtown can confirm a specific property.
What are homes selling for around Elizabethtown right now?
Across the Hardin County area, homes sold for an average of about $299,000 and spent an average of 87 days on market (HKAR MLS, residential and farm, September 1 to 23, 2026). Prices and timelines vary a lot by neighborhood, condition and school district, so ask me for recent sales on the specific streets you're considering. If you already own and are thinking about selling, start with my home value estimate.
The bottom line
An Elizabethtown address doesn't tell you which school district a home is in. Two districts, plus DoDEA on Fort Knox, overlap the E-town area, and the boundary can split a single street. Check the district's street list, confirm the exact address with the district, and do it before you're under contract.
